What is the Humber region known as? ›

From 1974 to 1996, the areas now known as the East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire constituted the county of Humberside. The Humber, from 1996, forms a boundary between the East Riding of Yorkshire (to the north) and North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire, to the south.

The Humber is a treacherous stretch of water because of the incredibly strong tides. It's not possible to swim across without boat support and can only be done at a point in the tidal cycle when the currents are the weakest. This is called a slack tide and happens either side of a high or low tide.

From Redcar on the County Durham border in the north, down to Flamborough Head's striking cliffs and beyond to Spurn Head on the Humber Estuary at Yorkshire's southern border, there are whales, dolphins and porpoises to be seen.

FAST BRIDGE FACTS

The origin of the river's name is uncertain. It is recorded in Old English as Humbre (dative). The Roman name was Abus fluvius., which suggests a British original which produced Abus in Latin and later Humber in English.

Lake Ontario's name comes from the Iroquoian word “Oniatarí:io,” and means “lake of shining waters.” The city of Mississauga was named after the Ojibwe word “Misi-zaagiing,” which means “large outlet” or “great river mouth.”

Between late September and early November migrating trouts and salmons can be seen at any of the weirs in the Humber River upstream of Bloor Street.
